LIVING LIFE HIGH ON THE HOG

LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVE PRINTS

2019 is the year of the Pig 猪 (Zhū), and in Chinese culture, they are often associated with wealth and prosperity which everyone hopes to have plenty :D

We chose the idiom “ be living high on the hog “ as the theme of our illustration as it ties nicely with the overall Chinese/Lunar New Year mood.

It has the meaning of people prospering, living very well, and the rich being able to afford the best meat cuts which are from the higher parts of the pig.

inspirations and concepts

With the main element being the Pig, we wanted to highlight its features, most notably its chubby face which is a symbol of fortune. Hints of gold act as accents as gold is, literally gold and we all love gold right?

The initial sketch features a lot more detail, which we stripped away as they would be too cluttered when printed.

Another delicacy which brings nostalgic memories to us is the kuih kapit (love letters), and the lovely patterns in the mould will be stamped onto the batter, giving the kuih kapit its unique appearance.

Gathering with loved ones and sharing food is always part of the celebration, so we thought of adding a hot pot of of food as one of the elements.

 the prints

Thankfully the prints turned out just as we wished it to be, although we couldn’t have the right paper weight on the pinkish paper stock ( for those who got a copy, you’ll know what we meant ).

The inspiration from this piece comes from the peeling bluish paints of the Old Town buildings, and also the history of it such as the Concubines, famous restaurants and landmarks.

And we are so honoured that Tourism Perak is keeping this piece!

Minimalist treatment to Modernist Homestay

Our client Inhome Concept are looking for minimal graphics to provide tourists with a brand new experience of homestay. As a result, we went with a geometric line arts of a neutral gray, coupled with real objects to provide additional contrast.

Experimented with Pantone’s Colour of The Year - Living Coral ( 16-1546 ) instead of traditional reds, and gradients which we took inspiration from aurora. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year folks!

P.S. Bonus points if anyone can spot the little easter egg creature in the illustration!
